There is no doubt that the recent worldwide pandemic changed things. Life as we know it has permanently shifted. How we live, how we play and – and particularly how we work – are markedly altered for most Canadians. According to Statistics Canada, over three million Canadians were working temporarily from home due to the coronavirus by February 2021.

“At the beginning of 2021, 32% of Canadian employees aged 15 to 69 worked most of their hours from home, compared with 4% in 2016,” per the Statistics Canada data.

If the COVID-19 pandemic taught us anything, it’s that we can never know what’s coming next. This doesn’t always mean something bad, but it’s important we prepare for anything.

What sets the strongest leaders apart from the crowd? Any number of characteristics contribute. Having a vision and communicating it, the ability to think creatively about the challenges at hand and a commitment to inspiring and motivating future generations to take on the baton.

During my time at Ontario Parks, those were among the characteristics that helped us create new generations of supporters of nature and the environment, among both young people and audiences who’d never had the exposure it takes to grow an interest in environmentalism.
