The pandemic suddenly cast all the research with regard to remote working into the spotlight. What was once reserved for a small fraction of the Canadian population suddenly became commonplace: remote workers are more prevalent and keeping them productive and happy is becoming increasingly imperative.

There is no doubt that the recent worldwide pandemic changed things. Life as we know it has permanently shifted. How we live, how we play and – and particularly how we work – are markedly altered for most Canadians. According to Statistics Canada, over three million Canadians were working temporarily from home due to the coronavirus by February 2021.

“At the beginning of 2021, 32% of Canadian employees aged 15 to 69 worked most of their hours from home, compared with 4% in 2016,” per the Statistics Canada data.

If the COVID-19 pandemic taught us anything, it’s that we can never know what’s coming next. This doesn’t always mean something bad, but it’s important we prepare for anything.

As business leaders, the stress can pile on. When outside sources of stress, like a pandemic, add another layer, it can be difficult to stay resilient. We see our business and people struggling financially, which can cause mental and emotional stress. Sometimes the best thing to do in these situations is go back to what we have always known.
